Background
Duminda Dissanayake, born in 1979, is a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament since 2000 elected from Anuradhapura district being the youngest member to be elected to parliament.[1] He was educated at Hatharaswela Government School, Walisinghe Harischandra Vidyalaya and Central College Anuradhapura and Royal College, Colombo. He was a student of Sri Lanka Law College, Colombo.[2]
His father was the late Berty Premalal Dissanayake, the former Chief Minister of the North Central Province, a former Member of Parliament in the Anuradhapura District and a former Minister of Social Services.[3]Duminda Dissanayake is married to Senani Lanka Jayarathne, daughter of late D. M. Jayaratne, a former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, who served as PM from 2010 to 2015.[2][4]
He represents the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), one of the two prominent political parties in Sri Lanka. SLFP was the main party of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), which was in power from 2010 to 2015.[1]

In 2016, as the Minister of agriculture, Duminda Dissanayake attended to a Sustainable Agriculture Development Programme (SADP) event in Anuradhapura. SADP, is a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) project by Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC), the British American Tobacco (BAT) subsidiary with the monopoly of cigarette manufacturing and trade in Sri Lanka. Even though he participated in the event, he spoke positively about the proposed ban on tobacco cultivation at the event and requested the farmers to divert to alternative crops.[16]However, the proposed tobacco cultivation ban was not implemented by the end of his term as the Minister of Agriculture three years later (2019) or as of July 2020.
