Department of Soil Science of the Faculty of Agriculture conducted a study in Galewela, a main tobacco cultivating area in Sri Lanka, to determine the impact on soil of incorporating tobacco as a rotation crop in rice cultivation. The results of the study were published at the fourth International Conference on Agriculture and Forestry held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on August 2017 (Image 1).[4]

The conference was organised by The International Institute of Knowledge Management. This study concluded that incorporating tobacco in rice based crop rotation in Galewela region did not cause soil fertility degradation.

Two newspaper articles were published on this study in Daily FT and Daily Mirror with the similar content and different headings highlighting that tobacco cultivation does not adversely affect soil fertility (Image 2). [5][6][7]

TobaccoUnmasked team contacted the authors of the abstract for funding details of the study on “Effect on incorporating tobacco in rice based crop rotation on soil fertility in low country intermediate zone” but did not receive a response by December 2018.
