Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) Image Promotion

On 26th November 2008, during the parliamentary discussion on the 15th allocated day for the Appropriation Bill 2009, Gamini Jayawikrama Perera positively spoke about the Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) (Image 2). The Appropriation bill, commonly known as the “Budget”, is an opportunity for the Minister of Finance to announce the government's economic policy, its performance in the past year, and new directions it is proposing to take in the coming year.[13]

Gamini Jayawickrama portrayed CTC as a “friend-in-need” for the government. Quoting a CTC’s press release published in a newspaper, he mentioned that it is a major contributor to the government revenue and the country’s economy.[14] Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC), the subsidiary of British American Tobacco (BAT), holds the monopoly of manufacturing and sales of cigarettes in Sri Lanka.
