Even though the 2021 Corporate Equality Index is proclaimed as “the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees” in their website, it is not actually recognised as a national level authority, but is an entity sponsored by many corporates including ones from big alcohol, big fuel, big food and big pharma.[1]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) in Zimbabwe announced that their 12% decline of sales volume was due to depressed disposable incomes of people because of COVID-19pandemic.[2]

  • In Sri Lanka, media reported that the Directors of Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) participated as panelists at a series of online discussion forums hosted by the Stock Exchange (CSE) titled “Beyond Basics: Excellence in Corporate Governance”. More than 100 participants including board members and senior management representatives of listed companies was reported to have participated in the forum.[4]CSE is a company limited by guarantee established under the Companies Act No.17 of 1982 and which is regulated by Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka.[5]
  • Trefis, a business and economy website reported that unexpected lockdown will be a major barrier to Philip Morris International’s (PMI) stock recovery with the rise of COVID-19cases in Europe and the USA.[6]
  • David Jagielski, a writer of The Motley Fool website highlighted that the cannabis has become the ideal alternative for the tobacco industry due to the business expansion on high potential growth of cannabis.[7]
The Motley Fool provides business and investing advice as mentioned in their website and had previously published cannabis trade favourable reports.[8]Cannabis is perceived as an alternative product for the tobacco industry due to drop of cigarettes sales, the relaxing regulations, the promoted image within the harm reduction approach and highlighted medicinal potential.[9][10] Internal tobacco industry documents revealed the interest of multinational tobacco companies in cannabis since 1970.[11]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) and Organigram, the Canadian company that produces cannabis products have entered into an agreement called ‘Product Development Collaboration Agreement’. Under this agreement, BAT and Organigram are developing core intellectual property values in development and delivery of the cannabidiol based products.[12][13]

  • According to media, the President of The USA Joe Biden plans to regulate the nicotine levels in Cigarettes. Media further reported that Biden administration is in the process of verifying whether the reduction of nicotine should be in combination with the ban of menthol cigarettes or it should be a separate policy. [35]
  • A news item reported that the stock price of Altria fell by 6.5%, on the news about the new regulation to reduce the nicotine content in cigarettes.[36][37]
  • According to a statement made byBritish American Tobacco (BAT)Malaysia, they anticipate a higher level of illicit cigarettes due to less affordability of the legal cigarettes as a result of the financial crisis of the pandemic.[38]

  • Media quoting a market report conducted by Mintel group with 2000 adults in Britainhighlightedthat30% became regular smokers during the pandemic and 10% relapsed from quitting. The reason stated was “pandemic stress”.[39][40]
Pandemic stress leading to create smokers was a common statement made by the tobacco industry and its allies as reported in the March page. Mintel group identifying itself as “an independent market analysis company” and it partnered with many multinational companies including food, beverages and pharmaceuticals as stated in their website.
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) completed the first phase of a factory to produce tobacco free oral nicotine pouches in Kenya.[41][42]
  • ITC hotels started a home delivery mechanism with a special menu for the COVID-19 infected and quarantined at home. ITC hotels are owned by ITC Limited India, the tobacco company which diversified their business into other ventures.[43]

  • Welcomhotels, a category of ITC Hotels started to provide quarantine facilities to asymptomatic COVID-19 positive cases in four cities; Chennai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Dwarka in India in collaboration with Manipal hospital. This was following an order by the Government National Capital Territory of Delhi to increase the bed capacities for the COVID-19 patients. [66] ITC hotels is one of the other business ventures of ITC Limited India, the main tobacco company in India invested by British American Tobacco (BAT) and the government of India.[67] < ref> ITC.   • Neil Coupland, Managing Director of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) Bangladesh, was featured in an interview on Japan’s business interests in Bangladesh conducted by The Daily Star. The report highlighted JTI as the highest foreign direct investment (FDI) of Japan in Bangladesh (as of May 2021). It further featured JTI’s COVID-19 related cooperate social responsibility (CSR) activities including provision of essential goods and protective equipment to low income families and frontline workers. Furthermore, a CSR project launched in 2015 (JTI investment happened in 2018) “community investment initiatives to improve access to water sanitation & hygiene (WASH) and disaster management” was also mentioned in the report.   • Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tilray, a Canadian pharmaceutical and a cannabis products company, hinted about a potential investment by Philip Morris International (PMI) (Image 1). This was followed by a statement made by the CEO of PMI about their plan to invest in cannabis. He further stated that they are planning to influence the governments of the USA and Canada saying “there's lots of lobbying I have to do with the government in Canada to get things changed and there's lobbying we have to do in the U.S. to ultimately to get the SAFE Banking Act on and to get recreational and medical cannabis legalized in the U.S.” [70]

  • Jacek Olczak, CEO of Philip Morris International (PMI) has announced that they are planning to stop selling cigarettes within next 10 years and move on to heating and vaping tobacco products. The transition is planned to be initiated from Japan. However, a specific plan to achieve this goal is not apparently made available. [71]

JUUL Labs, an e-cigarette producer, allegedly funded the special issue of the journal and it was coordinated by a representative of a consultancy firm commissioned by the British American Tobacco (BAT) and the Reynolds American. Altria group owned 35% of shares of JUUL Labs as of December 2018 as reported by media (Image 2).   • Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) declared that there is a revenue growth during the first quarter in 2021, even though a profit increase was not observed. Media reported the revenue to be LKR 34.8 billion, a 1.5% growth compared to the 2020 first quarter revenue (Image 3).[105]

  • House of representatives including 154 lawmakers are planning to pass a bill to regulate vaping and heating tobacco products in Philippines. According to media reports, the bill will regulate the manufacture, use, sale, packaging, distribution, advertisement and promotion of vaping and heating products.[107]
  • Cronos Group, a Canadian cannabis producer has hired Thomas Cohn, an expert from Federal Trade Commission who worked in Avon, a consumer products company. Cohn was hired as the head of regulatory and product of Cronos to expand the product portfolio via advertising and marketing campaign with rising demand for the legalized cannabis in USA. Altria Group has invested nearly USD 1.8 billion on Cronos as mentioned in the 2020 third quarter report of the Cronos group.[108] [109] [110]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) West and Central Africa was awarded with maiden awards under the ‘People First CEO’ and ‘People First Organisation’ categories.
