Background
ITC Ratnadipa (formally known as ITC Colombo One) is located in the capital city of Colombo which contains luxury guest rooms, suites and service apartments.[1] ITC Ratnadipa is constructed by the WelcomHotels Lanka (Pvt) Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of ITC Limited India.[2] ITC Limited India is the main cigarette manufacturer in India, which includes multiple business ventures such as Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), Packaging and Printing, Agri Business and Hospitality. On 27th July 2023, the management of ITC Limited India proposed to demerge the hotel Business from the group.[3] ITC Ratnadipa is reportedly the first ITC hotel built outside of India.[4]
Ground Breaking Ceremony
On 19th November 2014, the ground breaking ceremony of ITC Ratnadipa (then known as ITC Colombo One) was held with the participation of Basil Rajapaksa (Minister for Economic Development), Y K Sinha (High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka), Y C Deveshwar (Chairman, ITC Limited), Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena (Minister for Investment Promotion), A.J.M. Muzammil (Mayor of Colombo), Ajith Nivard Cabraal (Governer, Central Bank of Sri Lanka) and Daya Ratnayake (Army Commander).[5]
Opening Ceremony
President Ranil Wickremasinghe declared open the ITC Ratnadipa on 25 April 2024. Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Sanjiv Puri, Chairman of ITC Limited India and Dinesh Gunawardena, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka also participated in the event.[6][7]
Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) recommends that government officials and employees take measures to avoid any interactions with the tobacco industry as there is a fundamental irreconcilable conflict between the interests of the tobacco industry and the public health policies.
