Week 55: 29thMarch- 4th April 2021

Even though the 2021 Corporate Equality Index is proclaimed as “the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees” in their website, it is not actually recognised as a national level authority, but is an entity sponsored by many corporates including ones from big alcohol, big fuel, big food and big pharma.[1]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) in Zimbabwe announced that their 12% decline of sales volume was due to depressed disposable incomes of people because of COVID-19pandemic.[2]

  • In Sri Lanka, media reported that the Directors of Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) participated as panelists at a series of online discussion forums hosted by the Stock Exchange (CSE) titled “Beyond Basics: Excellence in Corporate Governance”. More than 100 participants including board members and senior management representatives of listed companies was reported to have participated in the forum.[4]CSE is a company limited by guarantee established under the Companies Act No.17 of 1982 and which is regulated by Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka.[5]
  • Trefis, a business and economy website reported that unexpected lockdown will be a major barrier to Philip Morris International’s (PMI) stock recovery with the rise of COVID-19cases in Europe and the USA.[6]
  • David Jagielski, a writer of The Motley Fool website highlighted that the cannabis has become the ideal alternative for the tobacco industry due to the business expansion on high potential growth of cannabis.[7]
The Motley Fool provides business and investing advice as mentioned in their website and had previously published cannabis trade favourable reports.[8]Cannabis is perceived as an alternative product for the tobacco industry due to drop of cigarettes sales, the relaxing regulations, the promoted image within the harm reduction approach and highlighted medicinal potential.[9][10] Internal tobacco industry documents revealed the interest of multinational tobacco companies in cannabis since 1970.[11]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) and Organigram, the Canadian company that produces cannabis products have entered into an agreement called ‘Product Development Collaboration Agreement’. Under this agreement, BAT and Organigram are developing core intellectual property values in development and delivery of the cannabidiol based products.[12][13]

  • Media reported that a share of Cronos Group, a cannabis producer in Canada which was trading at $5.89 at the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, has become $15.83 by February 2021. According to the2020 third quarter Cronos-Group-Reports-2020-Third-Quarter-Results.htmlReport of Cronos group, Altria Group has invested nearly USD 1.8 billion on Cronos.[27][28]

  • According to media, the President of The USA Joe Biden plans to regulate the nicotine levels in Cigarettes. Media further reported that Biden administration is in the process of verifying whether the reduction of nicotine should be in combination with the ban of menthol cigarettes or it should be a separate policy. [35]
  • A news item reported that the stock price of Altria fell by 6.5%, on the news about the new regulation to reduce the nicotine content in cigarettes.[36][37]
  • According to a statement made byBritish American Tobacco (BAT)Malaysia, they anticipate a higher level of illicit cigarettes due to less affordability of the legal cigarettes as a result of the financial crisis of the pandemic.[38]

  • Media quoting a market report conducted by Mintel group with 2000 adults in Britainhighlightedthat30% became regular smokers during the pandemic and 10% relapsed from quitting. The reason stated was “pandemic stress”.[39][40]
Pandemic stress leading to create smokers was a common statement made by the tobacco industry and its allies as reported in the March page. Mintel group identifying itself as “an independent market analysis company” and it partnered with many multinational companies including food, beverages and pharmaceuticals as stated in their website.
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) completed the first phase of a factory to produce tobacco free oral nicotine pouches in Kenya.[41][42]
  • ITC hotels started a home delivery mechanism with a special menu for the COVID-19 infected and quarantined at home. ITC hotels are owned by ITC Limited India, the tobacco company which diversified their business into other ventures.[43]

  • Jacek Olczak, Chief Operating Officer of Philip Morris International (PMI) expressed his views on a new way of achieving progress, which got quoted by the media. He expressed on how to address the COVID-19 global challenge and rebuild the progress of the industry.[52]
  • Emmanuel Babeau, Chief Finance officer of Philip Morris International (PMI) mentioned that the heated tobacco products assisted to raise their trade, which was impacted by the pandemic during the first quarter.[53]
  • Media reported that the Philip Morris International (PMI) is looking at market opportunities in the cannabis industry quoting its CEO.[54]

  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) USA is reportedly planning to ban flavoured cigarettes and cigars within the year 2021.[55][56]
  • Media reported that the ITC Limited India will financially support to set up 200 beds for COVID patients in Kolkata and had donated emergency medical supplies.[57][58]
  • Altria Group announced that they have brought a Switzerland based smokeless tobacco company and has obtained the full ownership of the smokeless tobacco product called ‘On’ aiming to “grab” the people who are quitting.[59]
  • Philip Morris International (PMI)’s heated tobacco products (IQOS) contributed to nearly 7% of company’s revenue in 2020, with the reduction of cigarette sales due to COVID19 pandemic. Revenue from heated tobacco products has increased by 26.3% in 2020.[60]
  • British American Tobacco (BAT) featured a news item on their website on the celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlighting their contribution to enhance the health and safety of their employees and contractors amidst the pandemic.[61]
